THE MYTHS OF LIFE INSURANCE...

MYTH #1: I DON’T HAVE A LOT OF CHOICES
The Truth: There are hundreds of companies authorized to sell insurance in Md. Many have various different plans worth considering. Rates vary widely depending on the carrier and plan.
It’s a mistake to think that similar plans have similar rates.
There are even plans that can Return all Premiums paid at the end of the term resulting in zero cost.
MYTH #2: I CAN ALWAYS GET IT LATER
The Truth: While we would all like to think we are invincible, our health can change in an instant.
We all cross a line in time that makes us either uninsurable or very expensive to cover. An Accident or illness could easily render you uninsurable in an instant. Not to mention you cost goes up with age.
MYTH #3: IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO LOWER MY RATE WITHOUT A DOWNSIDE
The Truth: It’s not uncommon to reduce costs
Rates have been declining over the last few years.
Most people think that in order to lower their rate they have to give up benefits.
You may be able to alter your current policy or start a new one & save a significant amount of money.
-Shop Term rates
-Switch from an older Whole Life to newer low cost permanent plans.
-Combine several different types of coverage.
-Shop & Compare.
MYTH #4: I HAVE COVERAGE AT WORK & DON’T NEED MY OWN POLICY
The Truth: Most people think that having a policy at work is sufficient. The reality is that in most cases coverage provided by employers is more expensive than stand alone policies. Also, you are covered only while employed. If you change jobs, are laid off, or leave for any other reason you may be without coverage. Most people that we work with realize that employer coverage alone is not enough to care for their families.
MYTH #5: IF I CHANGE PLANS I’LL HAVE TO TAKE A MEDICAL EXAM
The Truth: This is not correct.
There are plans available that do not require any exams or shots.
MYTH #6: CHANGING PLANS IS JUST TOO TIME CONSUMING
The Truth: This used to be the case but now we’re in the internet age. You can
review plans in minutes an- applications can be filled out quickly in 10-15 minutes.
The truth is you could choose a new plan, lower your rate and be saving money shortly.

Moving from Group to Individual Coverage:
Many Americans get their insurance coverage – particularly life and health – from their employers.
But what happens when they lose their jobs or retire from the work force?
When employer-provided group health insurance coverage is terminated due to job loss or retirement
the first line of defense is usually the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 or
COBRA. COBRA mandates an employer insurance program to provide qualified former employees
the ability to continue health insurance coverage for up to 18 months (sometimes extended to 36
months) after leaving employment.
On the other hand, workers who lost their employer group life insurance basically have three options.
If the individual has a new job waiting for him or her, and that company provides group life coverage,
he or she can simply get new coverage. Purchasing an individual policy is another option for those
who can afford it. But for others the only recourse is to convert the group life insurance into individual
coverage.
The process of converting from group to individual insurance out of necessity is hampered by several
factors. Losing one’s job or being forced to retire without sufficient savings is a stressful time filled
with so much financial uncertainty. Loss of employment or retirement also triggers depression,
lethargy, lack of focus and inaction in some people. Either way, the insurance matter could easily,
albeit unintentionally, be relegated in the background or forgotten entirely.
Unfortunately, time is of the essence in the conversion process because it must be accomplished
within 30 or 31 days from the date of employment termination. Typically, most employers simply
provide the departing employee with a contact number of the group insurance carrier. On top of all
the emotional and financial issues the individual must now deal with the insurance company’s
customer service representative – somebody who knows practically nothing about the voice on the
other end of the line.
This is where we can step in and provide an essential service to our affected clients or
prospective clients at a time they need it the most.
When a CSR mentions that converting group life coverage worth $50,000 to an individual policy will now cost $4,000 annually in premiums the CSR
is only doing his or her job. How you, who just entered retirement or got laid off, will be able to
afford $4,000 a year is not part of the prepared script.
While you may get a lot of information from a CSR it is unlikely that the CSR will take the time
to explain the options and the alternatives. After all, CSRs work for their company and not for your
client.
On the other hand, agents have more freedom to be creative and resourceful than a CSR who is likely
to be duty-bound to stick to a generic script or other limitations (such as time allotted per caller)
imposed by the company. A good agent or advisor doesn’t settle for a single quote but looks for
cheaper options – one that is most suitable given the client’s financial situation.
For example, group life conversion does not require filling out medical forms or having medical tests
in order to buy an individual life insurance. This is particularly useful for clients who may have
developed certain health conditions over the years.
But this is the very reason that makes the premium of converted individual polices more pricey than
regular individual coverage. If you are healthy, then purchasing a regular individual coverage
maybe a better strategy.
Some carriers provide lower premiums if you buy an individual plan – depending on health, lifestyle, family medical history, build and tobacco use.
Other group life policies determine the premium for the new policy based on the insured's age at the
time of conversion. If available this is an option that younger clients should definitely consider. Some
employers may continue to provide their retired workers with group term insurance coverage at
reduced amounts.
We can sit down and help you find a way to fund an individual
policy should the most affordable coverage remain a source of financial strain. This may help the
you resist the temptation to drop insurance coverage at this time when protection is most critical.
Helping you transition from group life coverage to individual life coverage within the allotted
time period can be a challenge. Like any challenge, it should be dealt with systematically. Remember,
you have a lot on your mind at this point. We can help by ensuring your necessary
papers and documents are complete and sent to the right address to avoid any delays.
